GentleBant walks up sheepishly to the mic outside of the RHS 2000 Hall.

**squeak** <glances nervously at other members of the RHS>

"On behalf of the RHS and the Royal Naboo Five, I would like to welcome you all to the newest incarnation of the Royal Handmaiden Society. We are a society formed in recognition of, and admiration of, the five loyal handmaidens of Queen Amidala--Sabé, Rabé, Eirtaé, Saché, and Yané..
We are determined that their achievements and importance to the SW universe not go unnoticed, nor their stories untold. We gather then, to debate and discuss all relevant (and a few not-so-relevant) issues of Handmaidenology, be they serious or otherwise, in friendly fashion. We are open to and welcome all interested persons who wish to participate in this noble pursuit."

<GB steps away from the podium. The of Naboo's proceed to cut the ribbon draped across the entrance of the new hall. the RHS founder Rebel Operative, semi-retired convenor and Keira-ologist Lt. Piett, RHS website keeper and image collector QG'sP, and several of the other founding members greet visitors in the splendid new entryway.>

In honor of the video release (finally!) and in the hopes of many new screen shots of our Royal Five, I dedicate this thread to the continued admiration, honoring, discussion and debate of Handmaidenology.

No RHS thread would be complete without:

YYYYAAAaahhhhooooooo,

GentleBant, You can put together a he!! of a introductory statement. A real call to arms. I think I can hear LT shakin in is boots, afraid that they will rescind the title of Chief Convenor (semi-retired) of the RHS and award it to you.

Now, rise up all able and willing members of the Royal Handmaiden Society and do your part to ensure that the role our lovely handmaidens performed in the galaxy will not be lost to history, that people everywhere and forever will live fuller lives because they now about selfless service to a greater cause as demonstrated by The Fabulous Five. We will not let the Royal Handmaidens slip into lucasfilm obscurity. This I promise.

In the spirit set forth by GentleBant, I kick off the Eirtaé symposium of this thread:

Great opening, GentleBant!

Hello, people! Glad to be back! The year 2000 is the taste of freedom for your humble fellow RHS brother, yours truly. (Actually, the whole Daisy Hill State Mental Hospital schtick was getting as old as Yoda's unwashed tunic!)

I'm here to participate, enlighten, and/or entertain. So let's start the RHS VII thread with a few jokes! (I've posted two of these jokes on the official RHS website courtesy of the always sweet GentleBant.)

-How many handmaidens does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Two: one to change the bulb and Sabé to pull a switch!

-Where do the handmaidens shop for clothes?
At Bananaboo Republic.

Pity applause.

Thank you, thank you. I'm still glad to be here. So glad, in fact, that I feel... like tap-dancing!

Happy feet...hap, hap, hap, happy feet!

Hello, Red One & Darth Happy

Welcome to the Society, Darth Jigglypuff.

Nomi Jade, don't have a favorite handmaiden yet, eh? <hint>Yané</hint>

how about some screencaps of Yané? I need more blurry blob background photos to put in my Yané gallery. You can never have too many blurry blob background HM pics, is what I say. Well, if you are an HM fan you learn to really appreciate blurry background pics.

BTW, i was thinking about the Yané & Saché cards that (are out today BTW) are in the new "Battle of Naboo" whatever card expansion thingymajigger. Anyway, if this is the Naboo Battle, then what sort of pic will they use for Yané & Saché? I mean, they weren't in the Naboo Battle, were they?

Five cheers for GentleBant and her fantastic opening! Are we hopeful that GL will let us be handmaidens in Episode 2?

Welcome to all of the old members and to the newest, Darth Jigglypuff! We love to have new members because that means more support for the Fab Five. Glad you're here!

Nomi Jade, take a look at the Royal Handmaiden Society website at:

I must now add my own shameless plea. Please visit my Royal Handmaiden website! It's nothing compared to the RHS site, but it's a nice little bit of extra handmaiden support.

<Finished with her shameless pleas, Queen Sabé wipes the cookie crumbs off of her mouth and swigs the last of her punch then runs to take her place behind Obi-Wan and Anakin at the 7th RHS Thread Parade>

Oh, I have a project idea (forgive me if this has already been done to death and I just missed it.)

Any speculation as to what the costumes for the Queen and the Fab 5 are going to look like for EpII? I don't think Biggar is going to veer too far off from the basic ideas she has already established - ornate Asian-inspired gowns and headresses for Amidala and a "smaller" vertical look for the HM's. Do you think she'll keep using hoods as the primary device for shadowing the HM's faces or will she design something entirely different?

O.K. enough goofing off...I must go back to work.

GB that was a truly spifftastic opening. ~applause~

Nomi Jade of course you may join. just take the oath and welcome :-D if you want to know more about the handmaidens QG'sP RHS website (linked in the first post) is the place to go!

Darth Happy welcome back. cute name ;-) and here's some laughs for your jokes ~laughs~

Darth Jigglypuff welcome! aw, you have a cute name too. :-D

Yoshi, Yane, Red One, Queen Sabe, QG'sP hiya!

Yane a good question regarding the Sache/Yane in the naboo battle thing. well i'm guessing the cards will consider the battle 1) the end doh and 2) the beginnng when they escape from naboo. that way they'll probably be in the flame gown. however, ya never know maybe they got weird and had the two women pose in battle garb for their cards..i doubt it but maybe ;-)

queen sabe << 7th RHS Thread Parade>> LOL. i read that as theed and then took a closer look!

Jedi Kylenn hi. you draw? ~drool/envy~ um, i wish i could :-) hmm. we kinda discussed the costumes, but we never talked of the hoods. i image she will still use them but who knows. i also think that while there will be lots of ornate costumes for both the queen and the HMs that there will also be some more casual wear (being as it's dealing with ami and ani's romance. and a few of us hope that it'll show the queen and the HMs as best friends as well as in the professional way). :-D

my first try at posting a pic.i hope it is not too big. it works! this pic always cracks me up! admit it, ya'll are laughing ;-D

Like the Marie Celeste, were off and flying! Congrats on the successful launch, GentleBant!

With the release on video and QG'sP already on the case, this Edition of the RHS promises even more insight and sightings in the demanding discipline of Handmaidenology.

The Shot of Shots, take 2:

And now, precedented by the previous Thread, I bring you:

*****************************************
**************** The RHS FAQ ***************
********************************************

  • Who are you? What's your operating number?
The Royal Handmaiden Society. We don't have an operating number. Everything's under control here; situation normal.

  • Well, what are you all about?
The topic of this thread is the discussion, reconnaissance, conjecture, appreciation, advocacy, sending-telepathic-messages-to-GL-to-include-them-in-Episodes-II-and-III, and -- often -- adoration of any or all of five particular human characters from The Phantom Menace, collectively known as the Royal Handmaidens. They are the five young women who are the loyal confidants to, bodyguards for, and personal assistants of Queen Amidala. We've also wasted(?) tons of bandwith making puns/jokes on their "name" idiosynchrasies. (What is an HM's (Handmaiden's) favorite sound system? Dolbé)

We are an open-door, non-political assembly and welcome all stripe of JC.N member, Padawan to Master, "Gusher" to "Basher". We're also slightly zealous in our ardent fandom of the "Royal Five" as they are sometimes referred-to, though some would argue the "slightly" qualifier.

This thread is actually the eighth incarnation of the RHS, which was born in the course of Rebel Operative's thread "FAN POLL: Which handmadien name from Episode One do you like the best?". A simple poll turned into a serious Inquest, the kind of which only a pride of SW fanatics could generate!

For links to the other previous and related threads, see GentleBant's opening post above.

  • What are the Royal Handmaiden characters' names, and the names of the actresses portraying them?

    Sabé, a.k.a. the Decoy Queen, portrayed by British actress Keira Knightley;

    Rabé, portrayed by Brazilian/London-based model Karol Cristina da Silva;

    Eirtaé, portrayed by actress Friday (Liz) Wilson;

    Yané, portrayed by Storm Modelling Agency client Candice Orwell;

and Saché, portrayed by actress/up-and-coming director/daughter of GL's good bud Francis Ford, Sofía Coppola.

  • Well, who's "Padmé", then?

Padmé is the undercover identity of Queen Amidala herself, assumed when there is possibility of her mortal danger. Such is the case, of course, in TPM. Padmé is designed to appear a Royal Handmaiden. This was a scheme designed by Captain Panaka, the head of Security in Theed.

In TPM, obscure, underexposed (!) American actress and die-hard SW mega-fan Natalie Portman ( ) portrays Padmé/Amidala.

When Amidala assumes the identity of Padmé, Sabé similarly assumes the role of the Queen. When speaking as the Queen, Sabé often will "consult" the real deal -- "Padmé" -- in indirect or subtle ways, so that important decisions are still actually made by the Sovereign herself.

Below, Sabé (L) consults Padmé (Amidala)(R) on the decision to leave Naboo. (In the middle is Rabé (Karol Cristina da Silva)):

Such dual identity and deception is a major theme running throughout TPM. By no small coincidence, Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman look somewhat alike:

  • Didn't Natalie Portman play both the "Decoy" and Padmé simultaneously, via special effect?

NO. When you see Natalie onscreen as Padmé, the Queen is portrayed by Keira Knightley.

Are you sure? I heard Rick McCallum say...

Rick McCallum didn't get the memo or slept through the meeting or sniffed too much glue in the ILM Creature Shop or something.
And we are 99.9999% sure of our conclusion! One developed skill you get as a consequence of being a "Handmaidenologist" is the study of physiognomy, the subtleties of facial features. As you can see from the comparison pic above, Ms. Knightley's eyebrows are straighter and thicker than Portman's, her lips fuller, and her dark brown, deeply soulful eyes not as "almondine". {{**sigh**}} Oh. Ahem. Excuse me.

We are certain you too will see such features in TPM (especially now that you have your video copy . . . right?) when you see the Decoy Queen onscreen next to Padmé. Trust us; we've stared holes in our monitors over this.

Also, a quote from TPM Casting Director Robin Gurland -- originally posted on theForce.net -- definitely weighs in here:

    quote:
One of the hardest roles to cast was that of Sabé, the handmaiden that fills in for the Queen when she is in hiding. Orignially we were going to use a stand-in, but that was before we found a girl by the name of Kiera [sic] Knightley. She was only fourteen at the time of principle photography, two years younger than Natalie Portman but nevertheless the resemblance is striking. I wouldn't be surprised if she fools quite a few of the fans.

And what really capped the issue recently was a quote from Natalie Portman herself, in Star Wars Insider #47:

    quote:
Q:"Was there any thought given to having you play both parts? It could have been done digitally."

NP: "A lot of people just assume they did, because this is such a big special effects movie. But I think George really wanted to do two people, so that on repeat viewing you could go back and actually see where it is me and where it isn't me. Also, it's more believable -- you actually know that she's using a double. My mom, the first time she saw [Kiera [sic] Knightley, who played the Queen's decoy, Sabé] in all the makeup, thought it was me. She went up to her."

BTW, it is another 99.9999% certainty here that Ms. Knightley's name is spelt "Keira", NOT "Kiera", as all her previous credits as well as press have spelt it that way.

What about the "Black Feather Headdress outfit? I have a pic of Natalie Portman -- definitely Natalie Portman, considering the facial features as you mention -- wearing it!

You've seen a Promotional Shot wherein she indeed dons that costume. BUT -- she did not wear that costume in the actual movie; only Keira Knightley did. It wouldn't make sense for Natalie to have worn it then; plot-wise, the Queen is exposed to danger when that outfit is worn (e.g., being routed out of the Palace), and Padmé is present.

  • Who's the Handmaiden who says in that relatively exotic accent "I'm sorry Anakin; Padmé is not here right now", etc., in the Queen's quarters on Coruscant scene?.

That's Rabé, portrayed by Karol Cristina da Silva.

  • Where else may I find info on the Handmaidens, especially any Official material?

A network of fansites on the Web is growing stronger and stronger! Start searching around, perhaps starting with (of course) the Official Royal Handmaiden Society website.

As for Official material, much of the publications to date either ignore or merely account for in passing, the Royal Five. The Episode I Visual Dictionary does, however, give a nice spread on them (pages 26-27), but unfortunately mislabels them in the TPM still it publishes.

Here is the RHS-corrected version, courtesy of RHS legend marcel_proust:

  • I sense a greater purpose here..."There is something else behind all this, your highness!"

Right you are! We of the RHS feel and think that the Handmaidens are unjustly overlooked in the Official SW establishment, as shown for example by the Official site, which apparently gives more creedence to anonymous Naboo regulars, Jabba's dancers from ROTJ-SE, and every single Podracer CGI alien over these human characterizations of loyalty, steadfastness, and bravery. As it stands now, the Official Site barely lists them on the Episode-I cast page, and glaringly makes zero mention anywhere of Keira Knightley / Sabé, who objectively played quite an important role in the story and movie!

So, yes; the RHS is perhaps grounded in a natural sense of Justice as we see fit.

At any rate, we bid you Welcome!

    **Piett**

Hello again everybody! This is so much fun that I had to post again and welcome all of those whom I have not yet welcomed. Unfortunately, my post has to appear after Lt. Piett's pamphlet on the field of "handmaidenology." If it were printed, published, and put in college office waiting rooms, I almost guarantee that people would be convinced that it was a real field of study. BTW, congratulations on take #2 of the "Shot of Shots." It's fantastic--I no longer feel like I'm being sneered at.

Here's a picture to help disguise the inferiority of my post.

Eirtaé in the Yellow Throne Room gown, my new favorite.

    I think I need another picture.<sigh>

The "Flame" Dress, my old favorite.

Well, I guess I'll go do work now...

But wait! I didn't realize it, but I'm a Jedi Knight now--just look under my name!

Also, Jedi Kylenn, thank you for introducing a new topic for discussion, and a very good one at that! The HM's costumes seem to have a mostly medieval feel, excepting the Throne Room Gown, which I think looks more Ancient Greek. I think Ms. Biggar will stick with that influence. IMO, she could toss in a few Empire style gowns, though. <wink to Jane Austen fans>

Okay, I'm really going to stop and do work now...

What a great christening, GentleBant. I'm wiping a tear from my eye as we speak. Who knew our little discussion about which handmaiden was which would blossom into the what we know call the RHS. Wow.

A hearty welcome to all the new members. May your time at the RHS be as enjoyable as it has been for me. This place is the best!

Well, I've been watching my widescreen video diligently the past twenty-four hours. Perhaps my excitement in seeing the film again is affecting my eyesight, but I'm still having problems with HMID (Handmaiden Identification) in key scenes. Okay, so it's just the Throne Room scene, but still! Has anyone figured out who's who yet?

Today, I was watching my kids at recess, and several of my students were playing/reenacting Episode I. I asked what characters they were when one of my girls spoke up. "I'm Sabé and she's the handmaiden who shots real good. We're protecting Queen Amidala." Too cute. Not only will my kids score well on the state test (they'd better!), but they are now fully versed in handmaidenology. My work here is done.

Think that's all for now. I'm looking forward to our RHS mini-con! Yippee! Can't wait!

I think I'll watch Episode I again. Rabé kicks butt, Panaka is just too cool, and I love watching Obi-Wan swagger. Gosh, I love that film!

    MTFBWY,
Andé...the "no one can turn her against Episode I" handmaiden

Andé . . . Force bless your good work for the leaders of tomorrow! Could there be a much nobler aspiration than to be Sabé for young lady in these dark times? {*wipes tear from eye*} Maybe there is hope, after all . . .

This proves, simply, my Society Fellows, something we all know (getting to the business of this Thread):

    HM's

    KICK

    ARSE!!!!

    ...and speaking of arse . . . {*ahem*} . . . whither Arsinoe?

    **Piett**

P.S. My screencaps aren't coming out as I would have them. QG'sP, S.O.S. (Save our Screencaps)!

Quick Question: Are screen caps just taking a picture of a scene on the television and then scanning the picture? Is it really that simple! I had thought it had something to do with computers and high-tech editing, etc. I hope not...

Lt.Piett, great job on the screen caps! I think they're a lot clearer than past pictures I've seen.

Alderaan21, I forgot that BTG pic was your favorite, or I would have let you put it up! Sorry!

Yes, Queen Sabé, You can certainly use the Eirtaé Story. Try and get the edited one from our fan fiction RHS site if you can. It fixed a couple of big errors. Thanks

Wow! Hi, all! Good to see so many of us here! :~)

Piett--excellent job on re-versing us in the RHS mission. I'd thought about quoting your opener from the last thread, but you say it so much better, yourself! Also--"YAY!" for those awesome screencaps! Keep 'em coming!!!!! :~)

Giantano, isn't it wonderful to see the role models that the HMs can be? I know of a few girls at our middle school who are absolutely fascinated.

Jedi Kylenn, thanks for introducing our next discussion! I believe the outfits we will see for the HMs (hopefully the same five!) will depend largely on what Ami is outfitted in. It may well be that Naboo is much poorer (over taxation?) by the time of Ep. II, depending on what Palpy's been up to. We may get to see Sabé do a few more impersonations, as well....

Anyone get a film clip with HMs in it with their copies of TPM? Mine is all Jar Jar. <sigh>

Yané, how goes the anthro project? And please get Saché to make an appearance here soon, already! <G>

A hearty RHS welcome to Darth Arash, as well! There's even a little punch and cookies left...help yourself!

    Woohoo!

And how could I not post:

    Rabé

    Have a great day, everyone!
    :~)

<Réka rushes in, out of breath and clothes in disarray.>

Ooh, new thread! And the introductions keep getting better. (Congrats, GentleBant!) I hope I'm not too late to get some cookies?

Gotta rush, but here are some random thoughts:

I, too, can hardly wait for our mini-convention on Saturday. Anybody have any requests to make as to what details we should check out on the costumes? (Keep in mind that not all of them are on display.)

I got my video yesterday. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to watch it yet, and probably won't until next week. <sniff> I can't quite figure out what my filmstrip contains--anybody have any good tricks to use when trying to view it? I can see fishies swimming around, and the lights of Otoh Gunga off in the background, but my sister insists that she can see Jar-Jar swimming, too. In any case, it's a bit of a disappointment. Anybody in the RHS get a strip with handmaidens in it?

Welcome to all our new members!

About the Ep.II costume question: the booklet that comes with the widescreen video has a short but interesting section on Amidala's and the handmaiden's costumes. I only had time to skim through it, but I think one of the drawings is a concept sketch of a handmaiden outfit. As such, it's the first time I've seen a drawing of what Ian McCaig had in mind for the Royal Five. It also makes me slightly more hopeful that they won't abandon the handmaidens in Ep.II. (Until and unless the official website puts up something--anything--handmaiden-related, I'm not going to be able to shake my niggling suspicion that GL considers the Fab Five to be disposable characters.)

Ok, enough with the random thoughts. I've got to get back to w*rk.

Of course there's some cookies left, Réka! <hands the plate over> We can always make more, too....

I was planning on trying to scan the Art sketches of the HMs tonight, but if someone already has, super! Otherwise, look for those by tomorrow! (BTW, what was with the elf-like ears on the female characters? Oh, and I didn't see a single sketch of A**** S***....at last, a little justice!)

Um, let's see, we haven't posted this yet!

Hey, GB, you got any poutine or kenachos? Incarceration had kept me from sampling these RHS delicacies. Just wondering.
(While in the looney bin, I was dreaming of fresh dried chokie, rhonto-burgers, and even Gamorrean Guard jerky. Them's good eatin's!)

Réka, you might want to try using a lightbox (from photography, you know?) and a loop (a magnifying monocular, also from photography) to view your filmstrip well. If you don't have these things, just drop by a photography store or a film-developing place and ask to use a loop and a lightbox.

By the way, my filmstrip is of Obi-wan with his ignited blue saber in a hallway of the Trade Federation orbiting platform (I think it's the scene in which Obi-wan guards against battledroids as Qui-gon cuts through the blast doors to the viceroys' bridge). I was hoping to get choice Maul shots, but, oh well.

Welcome to our newest member Darth Arash!

My mom has been too busy to go down to Blockbusters to pick up the TPM tape, so I'm stuck for now.

Everyone has posted the good pics already! I'm sure I'll find something, but I feel too lazy to type [URL] right now.

    Hello Everyone!!!!!

GentleBant what a wonderful start to the new thread!!! *hugs*

Welcome to all the new members .. there is nothing like a new thread to get people's attention.

Lt. Piett Dear .. I am here. And Sweetie, don't call me arse, or else. hummm foresee some nail polish in your future, I do, if care you do not take! *giggles*

btw Piett, how do you do screen caps?? I have a friend who wants a particular Qui-Gon screen cap and I have no idea how to do it.

My oh my .. how much more busy can one get. *sigh* But, I have my copy of TPM and I'm a happy camper. I got the Widescreen Collectors.. and the film cel I got had .. *gasp* Handmaidens in it!!!!

It's the scene where they are being escorted to the camps .. just before Qui and Obi 'rescue' them. Not the best HM scene, but an HM scene nevertheless. Battle droids and Sio Bibble are in the way. *grumble*

Well .. off to watch again .. "We are brave your Highness."

    heeeeeee!!

Thanks for posting the link, Yané. I had been there before, but there's much more up since my last visit...which was longer ago than I care to admit.

Arsinoe--good to see you again! Stay near! And <jealously>, you got a HM clip? Well, I'm certainly glad that someone in the RHS did!

Darth Happy...hmmm....kenachos and poutine....you'll have to talk to Saché and QG'sP about those, respectively. I could make some more cookies, though....:~)

    Where's Rebel Operative?

Looking back at the old threads, particularly the shot in the Senate that led
so many people to believe that there's only one HM in the floater with Ami....is there a chance that in some of the angles shot, they actually did leave out a person? We know that they would have had to take several different shots...and they were not always very careful about the number of HMs present...

    Anywé, just a thought!

    Good evening, all!

Darth Arash, welcome to the RHS!

I did some screen caps today. They're on the RHS site, if anyone wants to see them. They're a bit small, though...

Here are a few of them:

I'm 99% sure that the handmaiden behind the guard when Panaka says "check the transmission generator" is Saché.

By the way, my film clip has handmaidens in it, too! It's when Sabé & co are walking down the stairs of the Theed palace, just after the Trade Federation captured them. All the handmaidens are there!
